Vision & Purpose Of WCAG
Our vision is to motivate and equip each and every person to become a fully devoted discipler. We long to see young and old, new believers and old, and everyone in-between taking next steps in their relationship with God--supporting, encouraging, and loving each other. How does that happen? We believe that happens when we deliberately and consistently love God, love our neighbor, and love the world.
We take those three things directly from Scripture, specifically the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. The Great Commandment, found in Matthew 22:37-40, provides the directive to love God and love our neighbor. It says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” The Great Commission, found in Matthew 28:19-20, provides the command to love the world by making disciples. It says, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations." The first L, loving God, happens when we gather together to worship, but also as we seek Him throughout the week. The question then becomes, how do we love God, love our neighbor, and love the world?
We love God by establishing a relationship with Him. To do that, we admit our sins to Him, ask Him to forgive us, and believe that Jesus died to pay the price for our sins (John 3:3, 16; Romans 3:23, 6:23, 10:9-10; 2Corinthians 5:17). We also love him by regularly gathering together with other believers for worship (1Corinthians 10:31; Hebrews 10:25). Finally, we love God by striving for personal holiness (1Peter 1:16) and committing to the discipleship process Scripture lays out for us.
We love our neighbor by living out this life of faith together, something which requires spending time together outside of our times of worship. It means gathering together in smaller groups for encouragement, prayer, and support. It means striving to fulfill the "each others" of Scripture--love one another (1John 4:7), encourage one another (Hebrews 10:25), forgive one another (Colossians 3:14), bear with one another (Colossians 3:13), and so on. The primary vehicle through which we provide opportunities for loving our neighbor is small groups. We also love our neighbor by using our spiritual gifts to serve a ministry of church, whether teaching a Sunday School class, being an usher, greeting others as they come in, serving those in the nursing homes we visit, or any number of other spots.
We love the world by answering the call to use our gifts to serve those in need around us (James 1:27), by participating in missions opportunities as we are able, and by sharing our faith with those around us. We strive to live out the mission of God in every area of our lives, whether at work, at home, in the community, or around the world.
We believe loving God, loving our neighbor, and loving the world provides a biblical structure for discipleship, and it's our desire to continually grow in each of these areas. We'd love for you to join us on the journey.
